The Cancer Council WA’s fundraising event, Relay For Life 2022, took place at HBF Arena in Joondalup last weekend.
Relay For Life is a event in which teams take turns to walk or run non-stop around a track for 24 hours. The money raised by donations supports Cancer Council’s prevention and screening programs, and their investment into cancer research and treatment. Over 61,000 Australian lives have been saved as a result of their outreach.
NCARD has a tradition of participating in Relay For Life every year, as the cause is near and dear to our hearts. This year, we fielded a team of passionate participants in conjunction with the Institute of Respiratory Health (IRH). Our thanks goes to our official team members:
- Tracy Hoang
- Nicola Principe
- Jessica Boulter
- Wen-Shuz Yeow
- Lizeth Orozco
- Faith Chang
- Abby Thomson (IRH)
- Tina Firth
- Alistair Nash
- Tanya Ward
plus the unofficial members who walked with us. Thanks to their incredible effort, we walked over 100km in 24 hours! As a result, we raised $2,473 for Cancer Council – more, considering that late donations are still pouring in.
NCARD also ran a stall to demonstrate the work that happens everyday in our labs. At our station, members of the public could race against scientists to see who could pipette the fastest! It was great fun and a fantastic way to engage people with research.
Lasting memories were made as everyone united for a good cause. Next year, we hope to keep raising money and awareness to reach a cancer-free future.
