The National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD) proudly announces that PhD candidate Nicola Principe has been selected as a finalist for the Premier’s Science Awards 2024 in the Student Scientist of the Year category. This recognition highlights Nicola’s outstanding contributions to cancer research and her commitment to advancing STEM in Western Australia.
Nicola’s groundbreaking work at NCARD, a collaborative centre at the University of Western Australia and Institute for Respiratory Health, focuses on immunotherapy, where she has identified novel strategies to combat therapy-resistant cancers. Her research has not only contributed significantly to the field but also shows promise in addressing major health challenges Western Australians face, particularly with mesothelioma.
Nicola has already made her mark in the scientific community. Her findings have been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. This output at such an early stage in her career is a testament to her exceptional research capabilities and dedication to excellence.
In addition to her scientific achievements, Nicola has shown remarkable leadership and commitment to fostering a supportive scientific community. As co-founder of the Western Australian Kindness in Science initiative, she has been instrumental in promoting a culture of collaboration and compassion within the research environment. Her advocacy has led to tangible changes, including improvements to the mental health framework for PhD students at UWA.
Nicola has also been actively involved in science communication and community engagement. Through her work at the Harry Perkins Biodiscovery Centre, where she teaches high school students about immunology, she is inspiring the next generation of scientists. Her ability to translate complex scientific concepts for public understanding showcases her skills as a science ambassador.
The Premier’s Science Awards recognise excellence in scientific research and innovation in Western Australia. Nicola’s selection as a finalist in the Student Scientist of the Year category reflects her outstanding achievements across the award’s key criteria: excellence in research capabilities, impact on Western Australia, leadership and collaboration, and ambassadorship in engaging with the broader community.
Together with the finalist nominations, the Premier’s Science Awards has also announced a new third category— the People’s Choice Award, which is now open for voting. This gives our community the chance to support the exceptional work of our state’s future research leaders.
We encourage you to learn about all the 2024 finalists, including our own Nicola Principe, and cast your vote here.
As we await the announcement of the winners on August 19th, NCARD extends its heartfelt congratulations to Nicola on this significant achievement.
