The National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD) recently hosted its annual Scientific Symposium, a hallmark event that united top experts in mesothelioma research. The day was filled with discussions about the latest advancements, notable achievements, and exciting future prospects in understanding and addressing this challenging disease.
This year’s symposium brought together our collaborators from all corners of the country. By embracing a hybrid model, we ensured that both in-person attendees and those joining online could be part of the dialogue, strengthening the nationwide collaboration that’s vital to our mission.
Showcasing Research Excellence
From in-depth clinical trials like the DREAM3R study to collaborative efforts with renowned institutions across Australia, the symposium highlighted the breadth and depth of NCARD’s research initiatives. A significant emphasis was placed on the genetic landscape of mesothelioma, giving attendees a glimpse into the intricate workings of the disease at a molecular level.
Achievements that Resonate
A highlight of the symposium was the sharing of progress made in treatment outcomes. Notably, some treatments have shown encouraging results, with a significant percentage of patients experiencing extended periods without disease progression. These milestones, reinforced by observational data and case studies, are testament to NCARD’s dedication to making tangible impacts in the lives of those affected by mesothelioma.
Recognizing Student Excellence
At the symposium, special commendation was given to the bright minds shaping the future of mesothelioma research. PhD students participated in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, showcasing their work. We are thrilled to announce that Jessica Boulter emerged as the winner of the 3MT competition. In addition, Faith Chang was recognized with the ‘Highly Commended’ award. Congratulations to both Jessica and Faith for their outstanding achievements and contributions!

A Glimpse into the Future of Mesothelioma Research

With discussions around potential biomarkers such as intratumoural PDL1 expression and the expansion of global research collaborations, the future of mesothelioma research at NCARD looks both promising and expansive.
