Help shape the future of research into asbestos exposure and disease
The National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD) invites you to contribute to a national initiative to identify the most important research questions about asbestos exposure and asbestos-related diseases.
Why Your Voice Matters
Asbestos exposure continues to impact thousands of Australians. Our country has one of the highest rates of mesothelioma in the world, with around 700 new cases diagnosed each year. Asbestos-related diseases remain a major public health issue, contributing to thousands of deaths and affecting many more lives annually.
Despite these challenges, there are still important gaps in our understanding— particularly around how best to diagnose diseases early, provide effective treatment, and support those affected. Your experiences, concerns, and questions can help guide future research that truly reflects the needs of people living with or affected by asbestos exposure.
By sharing your voice, you’re helping to shape research that matters.
Who Should Participate?
We welcome input from:
- People who have been exposed to asbestos, whether or not they have developed a disease
- Individuals diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases
- Carers, family members and loved ones of those affected
- Healthcare professionals involved in asbestos-related care
- Consumer advocates and community representatives
What Will the Survey Ask?
You’ll be invited to share what questions you think should be explored by medical research. These could relate to:
- Managing health after exposure: How to manage health and well-being after asbestos exposure
- Diagnosis: How asbestos diseases are detected and identified
- Treatment: Ways to manage or treat asbestos-related diseases
- Support: Services and resources that help people living with asbestos-related diseases and their carers
How Your Input Will Be Used
Your responses will help NCARD researchers prioritise future research efforts and secure funding for studies that matter most to the community. By participating, you’re helping to ensure that research addresses the real-world needs and concerns of those affected by asbestos exposure and asbestos-related diseases.
Results and Findings
We are committed to transparency and collaboration throughout this research initiative. As our investigations progress, we will share the results and key findings from this survey directly on this page. Once the survey period concludes, we will update this page to include:
- A summary of the research priorities identified
- Key themes from participant responses
- Next steps in our research agenda
- Links to any formal publications resulting from this study
This ensures that everyone who participates or has an interest in asbestos-related disease research can stay informed and see how community input is guiding our work.

The survey takes just 10-15 minutes, and your responses are anonymous and confidential.
This project has been approved by the Central Human Research Ethics Committee. The survey will close on 31st August 2026.
About NCARD
The National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD) is a leading research centre based at The University of Western Australia and Institute for Respiratory Health.
We focus on improving outcomes for people affected by asbestos exposure and asbestos-related diseases, such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and asbestos-related lung cancer.
Our vision is to lead innovation and discovery to improve the lives of people affected by asbestos exposure.
Our mission is to enable the best scientists, clinicians, and researchers in the field to work together to prevent, monitor, treat and ultimately cure asbestos cancers.
NCARD researchers collaborate with patients, carers, healthcare professionals, and community advocates to ensure our work is grounded in real-world experience and community needs. To learn more about our work, visit www.ncard.org.au or contact us.
